Eva

Ceramic Designer Eva Zeisel passed away last week at the age of 105. She died after an almost 90 year long career, in which she designed over 100,000 objects and led a remarkable life that started in Hungaria, and brought her via Russia to the USA. She settled in Rockland County, New York, where she spend the last 50 something years of her life. Eva's life and her work where extraordinary. Driven by curiosity and passion, she didn't follow trends and had a rather humble mission: " I hoped my designs would give pleasure to the user when he had time to notice them, and yet recede when he was too busy or tired." In her playful quest for beauty, she was trying to tell us that design should communicate. With us. And with each other. That things have emotional effects on us. That  everyday objects can and should be soulful friends.

'tis the season ... and our note pads are back!

Friends, I am very thrilled about this: our new BINTH Note Pads are here!  In 2 practical sizes, 3 stunning colors and 9 fantastic designs....I think I got us covered.

When you go to the site to take a look, don't be fooled by the fuchsia designs, every note pad cover comes in three color styles...sky blue, iridescent and fuchsia. ( It's just that the fuchsia shows the best on a web site. )  All 3 cover stocks are absolutely gorgeous in color and texture. Hope you will love these as much as we do.

The bags we carry...

We Germans have a thing about bags. For us bags are highly functional objects and never meant to be frivolous. Bags are form not fad. Bags are not a fashion accessory, they are a "tool." Now, don't get me wrong, color, shape, material and overall look play a big role when buying a bag-but they are considered second to "functionality." It starts early. Here my brother and I with our very first bags, our kindergarten bags. It took a while to find the right ones, I remember...

In my opinion there is one German brand that has managed to strike a great balance between form, function and innovation and that is BREE. I grew up with BREE bags. BREE bags use the best leather, the best hardware and they last forever.

Talking About Favorite Spaces, Future Projects + Life Without Closets. My Interview with Holly Becker

As I promised in my previous post, here my interview with Holly Becker founder/editor of blog "decor8" and co-author of the book "Decorate." The book is packed with over 400 photos, it's almost 300 pages thick and shares an amazing amount of inspiration and advice. If you don't have it already-just go and get it...
Holly, thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. Now let's go...

Q: If you were to pick your favorite photos out of the entire book, which ones are they and why?
Holly— That's like asking me to pick my favorite child! I truly loved all of the homes in this book as I selected the locations so naturally I felt a connection to them. I have 12 that I'd like to highlight, but I could certainly add many more...

The anti-status symbol of the season

...this bag made me laugh so hard I just had to get it. Called the "Together Bag" made by brand new L.A.-based accessories label Thursday Friday this canvas tote comes in 4 colors... I went for the elegant "camel" version. Get yours here.

Hound's Tooth

"For me T-Shirts are like tattoos. Just not as permanent." Said Jarek this morning.  Here another of his most recent Threadless favorites. ( Disclaimer: This is not Jarek pictured here-it's a screengrab from the photo used on the Threadless site. Jarek currently does NOT have any toattos.)

The Thumbper

Our Threadless T-Shirt order arrived just in time. I love this Bunny design by Paul Odders. The perfect Easter Get-Up!

Things to do when snowed in...

..."slaughter" your piggy bank! We did just that and for sure scored big this morning. Plus we had hours of fun counting. Amazing what a little pig can hold! Oink oink...

Get your own pig here.  "Bank in the Form of a Pig" is designed by Harry Allen out of resin and marble and is cast from a pig that died of natural causes. ( In case you were wondering.) Oh, and you don't have to "break" your piggy -just open the cork in the belly . ( In case you were wondering about that, too.)

P.S. : Of course if you don't want a piggy bank you could just order our BINTH pig card... Another fine design from our "Offspring" collection. Smile.

Let's wrap this up...

We just got a new shipment of wrapping paper, to get ready for the holidays. Here are some of my all time favorites and some new designs from EIEIO Studios. Jean Orlebeke, designer of EIEIO papers, is inspired by the mid-century modernists, the abstract forms of modern sculpture, and the beauty of hand woven textiles. Perfect. I love this paper, this company, these designs...and how about the names: "Butter", "Viridian" and "Ogo"? Anyhow, now you know what we will wrap your BINTH products in-should you choose to go for the giftwrap option...ENJOY!

stillife of tweenlife

There is no denying that my son Jarek, my collaborator, my “baby” is growing up.
Here my “Sunday Morning” stillife -objects from around his desk, his room, our kitchen, the studio…these are the things he carries with him; the things he creates every day on his journey of becoming who he will be. Today, he seems to be very RED. ( Check out the cards we created together, when he was a little younger. We called that line “Offspring”. Last week I found a drawing on his desk. It is titled “Offspring. Part 2. The Evolution.” Can’t wait to see what he is thinking.)

Pictured here are...

Tiny Fingers Tiny Toes

I got a beautiful email from a customer today:

I am so glad I had the presence of mind to bring the baby book with us to the hospital. It was the only thing I cared about making sure I had with me. My son is named Raleigh Wyatt and his birth date was February 21, 2008. His little sister is due on September 24, so the chocolate book should arrive in plenty of time to come with us to the hospital.”

Attached were these photos of the  "Tiny Fingers, Tiny Toe” pages from her Binth Baby Book. How precious. How amazing. I am soo touched. (Kim lives in Colorado and if you noticed, Raleigh's name and the date are not filled in yet. Any suggestion for her on what pen to use?)

Please all of you out there-share photographs of your Binth Baby Book with me, I am curious to see and post them. Kim, thank you for being the first.

The Queen & King of England. For a day.

When Laura Robinson called from London and asked if we could be hired to design her wedding invitation we said yes. Yes we do. Laura and her groom Adrian had fallen in love with BINTH over our Joker Print collection and the matching playing cards. So much in love that they decided to go with the playing card theme for the entire wedding weekend in Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire. And today is the big day. Congratulations !
